Alyssum – Compacta

Basket of Gold perennial evergreen
Aurinia saxatilis ‘Compacta’
Yellow blooms radiate sunny warmth, covering the foliage as they spread in beds and borders, tumble over walls, and trail from the sides of baskets or window boxes. Also known as Basket of Gold and Dwarf Goldentuft, it is a popular choice for rock gardens, ground cover, and edging. This plant actually prefers poor soils and will get leggy if soil is too rich. Perennial in zones 3-8. Full sun in most areas. May need some afternoon shade in hotter climates. Plants reach 8-12″ tall and spread 12-18″. Foliage is evergreen.
You can start this alyssum indoors 5-6 weeks before your last average frost, or you can direct-sow after the last frost of the season.
Press lightly into soil but do not cover too much as light aids in seed germination. Kept at 65° F, germination is in 7-14 days. Transplant into the garden 8″ apart.
Alyssum roots do best when allowed to dry out in between waterings, especially if they are in partial shade. Plants will rot if soil is allowed to stay moist for long periods of time. These plants perform best in low fertility soil. Rich soil can cause legginess. Cut back by 1/2 after blooming to promote new growth. Remove faded leaves during growing season. Allow foliage, which is evergreen, to remain for the winter, tidy plants in the spring.
