perennial herb for cooking

Product Description

A mild onion flavor perfect for salads, soups, and vegetables.  Clover-like, purple flowers are edible, making a nice and flavorful addition to salads.  Immature flower buds can be added to stir fries.

Hardy perennial in zones 3-9.  Clumping growth, so dividing them every 3-4 years would be beneficial.

Packet contains a minimum of 25 seeds.

Chives seeds are best used within one year of harvest.  The current seeds being sold were harvested early summer 2021.

Can be direct sown as soon as the soil warms up or started in flats 6-8 weeks before your last average frost. Sow 1/4″ deep. Kept at 65-70°F, germination is in 7-14 days. Thin to 3-4 seedlings per ‘plant,’ and transplant seedling clusters into the garden 2-8″ apart.

Chives are a cool-weather herb, so they may die off and go dormant during the hot summer months but will return in cooler weather. Flowers form during spring, so be mindful that if they are allowed to go to seed, your chives will self-sow and will end up taking over the garden. Make sure to cut flowers off before they dry completely.

While chives are drought tolerant, consistent watering produces higher yields of leaves for harvesting. Using a nitrogen-heavy granular fertilizer in late spring or early summer will also help. Divide your plants every 3-4 years in the spring. They are much more productive if divided regularly. Divide them into clumps of at least 10 small bulbs, allowing divided plants to grow for several weeks before harvesting.

When harvesting leaves, make sure to cut the leaves down to the base, within 1-2″ of the soil.
