Product Description

Datura metel

These plants are mistakenly referred to as Angel Trumpets but are actual Devil’s Trumpet.  Blooms of Devil’s Trumpet usually stand erect while Angel Trumpets hang down.  Fully double yellow flowers on plants reaching 30″ in height.  Please note these are only perennial in zones 9-10.  If you live outside of these zones, they are treated as an annual.  You can overwinter your potted plant in a garage.

Packet is 10 seeds.

Germination

Start datura seeds indoors 8-12 weeks before your last average frost.  Prior to sowing seeds, soak them for 24 hours in lukewarm water.  To sow, barely press into soil as light aids in germination.  When kept between 60-70° F, germination is in 15-30 days.  Make sure to keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy.  Note that datura seeds take longer than most other seeds to germinate, so be patient.  Once seedlings are well-rooted, transplant to 3″ containers.

Growing

Plant in the garden 24-36″ apart after all danger of frost has passed.  As for sun, most websites will say full sun for these plants, but I grew a double purple one that got mostly shade, and it did great.  It wasn’t as good as the double yellow I grew in full sun, but it still did really well with lots of flowers throughout the growing season.  Keep in mind though, I am in a hot, humid area (southeastern U.S. growing zone 8A), so if you grow this further north where heat and humidity are not as intense, it may require full sun to thrive.  I have found the best fertilizer to use for these plants is a well-balanced slow-release 13-13-13 fertilizer at the time of planting.  I usually do a second dose of 13-13-13 when I see a few leaves starting to yellow.  I also used liquid Miracle Gro a few times throughout the growing season, perhaps once a month.  Supply plants with consistent water for best results.  To encourage more flowers, deadhead spent blooms.
