Pansy – Cool Wave Strawberry Swirl
strawberry and lemon bi-colored flowers
Out of stock
This is one of the fastest growing, longest blooming trailing pansies. The flowers tend to show more pink/purple coloring during winter and spring while showing more of the yellow during summer and fall.
Pansies are an excellent addition to your fall/winter garden as they are frost tolerant. In the deep south, pansies will stop flowering and possibly die off during the summer months. Cool Wave has exceptional cold hardiness, hardy to -20° F (mulching in colder climates helps).
Plant reaches 6-8″ tall and spread out 24-30.” Transplant into the garden 10-12″ apart.
Packet is 10 seeds.
You can start pansies indoors 6-8 weeks before your last average frost, or you can start outdoors in cell packs in fall or early spring.
Press into soil and lightly cover. Keep out of direct sunlight until seeds germinate as darkness aids germination. Kept at 65-70° F, germination is in 14-21 days.
Transplant into the garden 6-12″ apart, depending on the variety (spacing for specific varieties is under the product description). While pansies are frost-tolerant, it is best to plant them out in early spring or fall.
Pansies prefer full sun to partial shade and need cooler temperatures to thrive. They will typically stop blooming in the heat of summer, especially here in the south. They prefer moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. They need regular water, especially in warmer weather. Remove faded/dead flowers to encourage plants to produce more blooms and to prolong the blooming season.
Fertilize every 2 weeks with a nitrate-based fertilizer with low phosphorus to reduce stretch. So contrary to what you may think, the first nutrient number (nitrogen) on the fertilizer needs to be larger than the middle number (phosphorus). Maintain a media pH of 5.5 to 5.8 (acidic). A pH greater than 6.2 can induce Boron deficiency and also encourages fungal black root rot caused by Thielaviopsis sp.
