Stock – Vintage Lavender
pastel lavender flowers on well-branching dwarf plants
Product Description
Matthiola incana
Sturdy well-branched plants, producing over 55% double flowers in a pretty shade of pastel lavender. This dwarf series blooms up to one week earlier than other comparable stocks. Flowers are sweetly scented. Stock prefers cooler growing conditions and are frost tolerant. They will survive winters in milder climates and bloom heavily in the spring. Plants reach 15-20″ in height. Transplant this variety into the garden 12″ apart. Pinching is not necessary for this variety. Flowers have a sweet, peppery taste similar to radishes and can be added to salads as a garnish. They can also be candied.
Germination
Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before your last average frost. Zones 7-10 can sow outdoors in the garden or containers in fall for spring flowers. Sow seeds about 1/4″ deep. Make sure to keep soil evenly moist but not saturated before seeds germinate. Kept at 65-75° F, germination is in 7-14 days. Transplant into the garden 12″ apart for dwarf varieties (Vintage series).
Growing
Stock is a cool-weather flower and will die off in the heat of summer.
