Sowing Seeds: Sept 2024 Part 1

As soon as I finished potting up last month’s seeds sown, I sowed a few more seeds. Here’s what I sowed on September 8th.

  • Shasta Daisy – Snow Lady
  • Rudbeckia – Cherry Brandy
  • Salvia – Big Blue (I’ve seen conflicting annual/perennial opinions on this one, so if it dies and doesn’t come back in the spring, I have plenty more seeds to start for this variety.)
  • Pansies – Pandora’s Box and Spring Matrix Pink Shades (I actually don’t need to plant these until the end of November since I am planting them with tulips, but I want to make sure both germinate well.)
  • Eucalyptus – Silver Dollar (This has always been a favorite variety of mine and one that I had planted in the ground at our previous house.)
  • Snapdragons – Snapshot Pink (I already started some of these last month, but I have a new planting area around the floating deck, so I wanted to plant some of these with some violas in the planter boxes I built in front of the deck.)
  • Violas – Sorbet Citrus Mix (This is another variety I had started last month, but I plan to mix these with the Snapshot Pink snapdragons around the floating deck, so I sowed a few more – and obviously mislabeled it in my seed tray; it’s fixed now).

I sowed 2 more seed varieties the following day on the 9th. They would have been sown on the 8th, but I forgot to pre-soak them the day before. I use these little plastic condiment containers to soak seeds and put the day, time, and seed name on the container when they start soaking. These are the hollyhock seeds.

  • Hollyhock – Peaches N Dreams – I read that hollyhocks have a long taproot and to sow them in tall containers. So I sowed 5 seeds total in 3 of these 2.5″ containers. I meant to sow 6, but I dropped a seed. 🤦‍♀️ I need 3 plants.
  • Hibiscus – Luna Pink Swirl (Soaked these for 24 hours also before sowing.)

That’s all for this first batch of seeds I’m sowing in September. The 2nd batch will be in another week or so. I’m sowing a lot of these perennials now so they can go through this winter for those that need vernalization.
